I'm a Californian who's in a good mood because I just got a book deal. Title undecided, because publisher's cool on mine. I think his is brilliant but gives away the ending. To be decided. Here it's good to see someone (me) smiling, as you can tell from our special election and the State Supreme Court's decision on Prop. 8 that everyone's furious and playing multiple blame games based on whoever aggravates you the most. The once richest state in the union now has the lowest credit rating for bonds. We're not just talking theory here, we're talking delayed responses to fire alarms (the latest = Santa Barbara), overcrowded emergency rooms, shut down schools. But all we have to do is look around. Our scenery still dazzles, life is beautiful, and we just need to tighten our belts and act like grownups. The best six things we have: Silicon Valley, Hollywood, Higher Living Apparel (young artists making custom designed tee shirts), restaurant's like San Francisco's Bix and Beverly Hills' Polo Lounge. Yes, it's still great. Don't believe me? Try the breakfast hash browns. Would love to hear what others are reading and seeing. I adored THE ART OF RACING IN THE RAIN and (forgive me) MARLEY. Naughty, naughty lobbyists. Fake letters are a no-no. Many citizens feel our elected representatives should pull together and act on crucial issues like energy and health care reform without listening to lobbyists or taking daily polls of their constituents. They should consult unbiased experts, tackle the problems, and pass reform bills. There's a difference between a politician and a statesman, and more people on Capitol Hill need to reflect on that. - Ann Seymour, author of "I've Always Loved You," a true story of ww2 in the Pacific
